Oracle
25 year old Pony mare
Ori's unusual coat is a classic
symptom of Cushings Syndrome. She has been partially
clipped because she was having problems regulating her body
temperature in temperatures as low as the mid-50's.
These photos perfectly illustrate
why you cannot depend on a visual exam alone to determine the
body condition of a horse in a winter or "Cushings" coat. |

Jubal
Arrived September 10, 2005
29 year old Quarter Horse gelding
Ringbone, an old hock injury and arthritis
have retired Jubal from riding. He will need special
attention paid to his dental health, requiring exams every six
months and a diet of soaked feed. (He can, however, still
chew grass and hay fairly well.)

Fred Astaire
Arab gelding - 25 years old.
Freddy
arrived when his very caring owner could no longer care for him.
This was not a case of "convenience," but an instance of an
owner willing to sacrifice her own well-being in order to care
for her horse as long as she could.
Freddy is
another of our Cushings patients. (These photos were taken
before his diagnosis. Sadly, Freddy's new diet does not include
unlimited grazing.)

Henry
23 years old
Sir Henry
is a majestic Thoroughbred cross gelding. Still feeling he is
the star of the show, Henry has done a little dressage, done a
little jumping and a few things in between. He is now
retired due to navicular changes and fusion of the coffin joints
in both front feet. Henry arrived when multiple family
medical emergencies forced his owner to make the very difficult
decision to give him up. Number 3 in our Cushings line-up.

for Betty's
medication for one month.
|
Betty Boop
Early 20's ?? (Rough estimate)
Betty's
breeding is unknown, but she is clearly a gaited mare with a
natural pace.
Miss Boop
is a very "Special Needs" mare, suffering both COPD and a rare
autoimmune disorder called Pemphigus. Pemphigus manifests
as a skin problem, with small (and very itchy) scaly scabs
covering most of Betty's body when the disease flares up.
Currently, these symptoms are being managed with Prednisone
therapy and restricted exposure to sunlight. (Betty is our
"Vampire Horse," only coming out at night.) |

An $11 donation will feed Val for
one week! |
Valentine
19 year old Thoroughbred gelding.
Val is a
mere whippersnapper in the great scheme of things, but arrived
at TREES as a seriously neglected horse. Because he is
missing quite a few teeth, Val was deemed "old" and his owners
believed it was, therefore, normal for him to be skinny.
He was 300 pounds underweight.
In
researching his lip tattoo (registered as "Corporate King,") we
discovered that Val was foaled in 1989, making him only 16, not
the 30 years old we were told. Why he is
missing so many teeth, we don't know. His dental
condition, however, means that Val must be cared for as if he
were a senior, even though he is not "old." He cannot chew
grass well, and cannot chew hay at all, so must have all his
nutritional requirements met by a processed feed which is soaked
to make a mash. |
